Topographic Modeling
Mr. Kaplan’s 6th grade class spent the last week constructing accurate three dimensional models from topographic maps. Index contours were traced on to card tag. These layers were shimmed with cardboard and pasted together to represent well known geological features found in the United States. The models were then covered with tissue paper and glue to create a surface. Finally, students painted the models realistically after having studied photographs of the actual sites. A lit bulb helped students to trace and darken shadow maps to the finished work. Thanks to Tori Popp for photographing the models.
